What Happens if you Try To Eat 1200 Calories a Day

W

1,200 calories is a diet for ants.

After the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Evidence Analysis Library published these farkakte (Yiddish for crazy, messed up, absurd) “guidelines” for weight management, I decided to demonstrate just how inane, damaging, and abominable this calorie recommendation is by trying to survive off 1,200 kcals.

To be fair, a woman can have UP TO 1,500 kcals a day, per these benevolent guidelines, in the pursuit of weight loss. Gee golly, big calorie spenders!

The fact that they’re using kcals (relics of the past never intended to be applied to human metabolism!!!)🦕 is abysmal enough, and then they go as far as to recommend these disordered limits which will wreck metabolism, promote nutrient deficiencies, and create profound food obsession — they flagrantly demonize #haes and a #nondietapproach, which, unbiased newer evidence DOES suggest to be helpful in weight normalization.

I’m sure the EAL cherry picked ridiculous weight-biased evidence for their ~guidelines~ which all the Essence RDs and I will promptly retire this advice to the drawer of skinny jeans.

The day I tried to adhere to these inane guidelines delivered with the wisdom of a houseplant, by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

1,200 kcals. I didn’t even know where to start. I’ve never counted calories except for patients on feeding tubes or babies in the hospital.

I basically had to bushwhack my entire day’s intake and slash all my favorite daily nourishing foods, (like, who eats LIGHT cheeses??? ) I was starving, angry, irritable, and obsessed with food all day. After only ONE. DAY. Of eating like this, which the guidelines recc to follow for ONE FREAKING YEAR.

Moral of the story: this extremely disordered way of eating, recommended by our RD governing body’s guidelines, will perpetuate a culture of disordered eating which will be damaging to bodies and brains and DO HARM. Hippocrates would be hippo-horrified

Calorie counting ruins lives and mars the exquisite joy of food.

And light cheese / fat free yogurt / stevia chocolate / diet foods taste like toenails.
